A fourth-generation Tanna and disciple of Rabbi Akiva, he is one of the most frequently cited sages of the Mishnah. He is traditionally associated with charity (the "Rabbi Meir Baal HaNes" fund). His tomb in Tiberias is a major pilgrimage site.
