A second-century Tanna and disciple of Rabbi Akiva, he is among the most frequently cited sages of the Mishnah. Kabbalistic tradition attributes the Zohar to him. His hilula at Meron on Lag BaOmer draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims each year.
